A hand pallet truck and an electric (battery-operated) pallet truck do the same job — move pallets along the floor — but at very different speeds, distances and costs. Here is how to pick the right one for your godown, shop floor or warehouse.
The short answer
- Choose a hand pallet truck if you move pallets over short distances (under about 30–50 metres), a few times an hour, with loads up to about 2.5 tons, on a flat floor. It is cheap, needs no charging and almost no maintenance.
- Choose an electric pallet truck if you move pallets all day, over longer distances, up ramps, or load and unload many trucks per shift. It saves labour and operator fatigue.
- Neither one lifts pallets onto racks — for stacking, you need a stacker, forklift or reach truck.
Hand vs electric pallet truck: side-by-side
| Hand pallet truck | Electric pallet truck | |
|---|---|---|
| Power | Operator pumps the handle and pulls | Battery-driven travel and lifting |
| Typical capacity | 2 – 3 ton | 1.5 – 2.5 ton |
| Best travel distance | Short runs within a bay | Long runs across a warehouse |
| Ramps and dock plates | Hard and unsafe when loaded | Manages gentle ramps with brakes |
| Speed | Walking pace, tiring over a shift | Steady, consistent speed |
| Charging | None | Needs regular charging |
| Maintenance | Very low — seals, wheels, oil | Battery, motor and controller care |
| Cost | Lowest | Higher rent or price |
| Lift height | About 200 mm (floor level only) | About 200 mm (floor level only) |
When a hand pallet truck is enough
Hand pallet trucks (also called hand pallet jacks or HPTs) are the most common material-handling tool in India for a reason: they are simple, rugged and cheap. They suit:
- Retail backrooms, kirana and FMCG distributor godowns
- Moving pallets from a truck tail-lift or dock to a nearby bay
- Factories moving work-in-progress between nearby stations
- Sites with no charging point
The limit is the operator. Pulling a full 2-ton pallet over long distances all day is hard work, and on any slope it becomes unsafe — a loaded hand pallet truck has no brakes.

When an electric pallet truck pays for itself
An electric pallet truck (also called a battery-operated pallet truck, BOPT or power pallet truck) does the pulling for the operator. It makes sense when:
- One person moves dozens of pallets per shift
- Distances are long — across a big warehouse or between buildings
- You load and unload several trucks a day
- There are gentle ramps or dock levellers
- You want to cut fatigue, injuries and labour cost
It needs a charging point and a little battery care, but one electric pallet truck often replaces more than one person pulling a hand pallet truck.
How to choose the right capacity
- Weigh your heaviest pallet, including the pallet itself.
- Add a safety margin — do not run a truck at its absolute limit every day.
- Check fork length and width against your pallet size. Standard forks fit most Indian and Euro pallets, but long or narrow pallets need different forks.
- Check the wheels. Nylon wheels roll easily on smooth floors; polyurethane wheels are quieter and kinder to tiled or epoxy floors.
Renting vs buying a pallet truck
Hand pallet trucks are cheap enough that many businesses buy them, but renting makes sense for seasonal peaks, stock audits, warehouse shifting and short projects. Electric pallet trucks cost much more to buy, so renting is common — maintenance and battery issues stay with the rental company. Our hand pallet trucks have a one-week minimum rental.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a hand pallet truck and an electric pallet truck?
A hand pallet truck is pumped and pulled by the operator, while an electric pallet truck uses a battery to drive and lift. Hand pallet trucks suit short, occasional moves; electric pallet trucks suit long distances and all-day use.
How much weight can a hand pallet truck lift?
Most hand pallet trucks are rated for 2 to 3 tons, with 2.5 tons being the most common. Always check the rating on the machine's plate.
Can a pallet truck lift pallets onto racks?
No. Both hand and electric pallet trucks lift only about 200 mm — enough to clear the floor. To stack pallets on racks, use a stacker, forklift or reach truck.
Can a hand pallet truck be used on a ramp?
It is not safe to move a loaded hand pallet truck on a ramp, because it has no brakes. Use an electric pallet truck with brakes for gentle ramps, and a forklift for steeper ones.
What is the minimum rental period for a hand pallet truck?
At Gourav Lifters, hand pallet trucks can be rented for a minimum of one week, with cheaper monthly plans.
