A 5-minute check at the start of each shift catches most problems before they become breakdowns or accidents. Do it with the engine off first, then running.

Engine off — walk around

  • Tyres: no deep cuts, chunks missing or low pressure (pneumatic)
  • Forks: no cracks, bends or heavy wear at the heel; locking pins in place
  • Lift chains: even tension, no rust, stiff or broken links
  • Mast and hoses: no oil leaks or rubbing hoses
  • Fluids: engine oil, coolant, hydraulic oil (or battery water for electric trucks)
  • Overhead guard and seat belt present and undamaged

Engine running — function test

  • Horn, lights, beacon and reverse alarm work
  • Service brake and parking brake hold
  • Steering is smooth, with no excess play
  • Lift, lower, tilt and side-shift are smooth — no jerking or unusual noise
  • Gauges and warning lights normal

If anything fails

Tag the forklift out of service and report it. Running a forklift with faulty brakes, chains or forks is how serious accidents happen.

Tip: Keep a signed checklist sheet on each machine. It builds the habit — and shows auditors you take safety seriously.
